As the outdoor living industry continues to evolve, homeowners are starting to turn basic concrete patios into more interesting outdoor living spaces with less maintenance by covering them with a composite deck. Some may wonder if you can build a composite deck over a concrete slab. The answer is yes.
If you're looking to give your boring, concrete patio a refresh and make it look updated, resurfacing is an uncomplicated option. Here are a few considerations before you take your patio from slab to fab!
Inspect the condition of your concrete slab
It’s common for concrete slabs to contain cracks or craters. However, be cautious of badly cracked areas that sink noticeably year after year, as this may delay your project.
Check with your local building code agency on foundation footing requirements before building. We suggest consulting a Deckorators Certified Pro to ensure it’s safe to build a deck over your concrete slab or rooftop.
Working with sleepers
Ground-level and rooftop decks present unique challenges when it comes to water management and air circulation. The Deckorators Sleeper System provides support beneath the deck boards, in conjunction with Deckorators Decking or Porch Flooring made with Surestone™ mineral-based composite technology. It also allows for adequate drainage and ventilation which, in turn, protects the deck boards from damage due to moisture build-up.
Our sleeper system is available in two-toned gray and brown to complement any deck board color and is backed by our 25-Year Limited Warranty. Watch our friends over at The Ultimate Deck Shop to learn more about the features and benefits.
*Traditional Composite deck boards are not warranted for water and ground contact.
Proper decking installation
Arrange the sleepers on the existing patio and install decking. Be sure to allow a 1/4" gap between the long edges of the deck boards. Drainage and ventilation are necessary for the best product performance. See installation instructions for full details.
